About Edd

My name is Edward Marlin, I was born in Glasgow back in '87 and Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" was number 1 in the charts.  Yes, really.  When I was younger I could never make up my mind about what I wanted to do when I grew up.  It was helicopter pilot one minute and pyrotechnician  the next.  Towards the end of high school, I got the opportunity to do work experience with an advertising agency in Glasgow called "The Bridge" and I loved every second of it.  I was shown the ins and outs of the day to day running of an ad agency and split my time between the design studio and creative copywriting department.  From then on, that's what I've been wanting to do with myself.  I've always had a vivid imagination and a passion for creativity and all it took for me to realise that creative copywriting was the career for me was to get the smallest taste of it.  So, I went to the Glasgow College of Commerce and got my HND in Advertising & Public Relations and went on to get my BA(hons) in Media & Communication at Glasgow Caledonian University.  Hooray!

"That's all very well and good." I hear you proclaim, "But what have you actually done?" Well, over the course of 6 years worth of higher education, I have:

  • Written, recorded, edited and provided voiceovers for a 30 second radio advert for a fictional funeral directors’ called “Coffins ‘n’ Stuff” for a radio production class in Uni.  Due to the high quality of the completed work, the lecturer now plays it to each new class as a good example of a previous student’s work.  That, and I also know my way around a recording studio.
  • Contributed towards a 15 minute documentary on the West Brewery by coming up with interesting establishing shots, recording the sound with a boom mic, editing the film and the sound files.  Oh, and sampling the beer. Yum yum.  From that, I also have a good working knowledge of sound and filming equipment.
  • A good working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, AVID, Audacity, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Gained the superpower of being able to speak conversational German.
  • Assumed the role of creative copywriter for a made-up advertising campaign for the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service.  I then had to pitch the made-up campaign to a representative of the client complete with a rough radio advert.
  • Given a presentation on Freud's concept of The Uncanny and how it applies to modern horror films and the audience was still awake at the end of it.

"Well!" I hear you gesticulate further "You must have no life!" On the contrary..:

  • I have regularly been accused of possessing a good singing voice.  I can also play acoustic guitar and the drums.
  • I have taken part in two karaoke contests winning both.  I won £100 and a bottle of tequila singing "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey, back when it wasn't played to death.  Later, I won £50 by singing "Johnny B Goode" and replicating the guitar solos on a kazoo I referred to as the "Fender Kazooicaster "
  • I sang lead vocals as part of a funk rock band called “Pals of John”.  I co-wrote a number of songs, the band recorded an EP and performed a wide variety of paid and un-paid gigs throughout the Glasgow area.
  • I am 6ft3, so naturally I play basketball on a regular basis.  I'm getting pretty good at it.
  • I am 6ft3, so naturally my centre of balance is rubbish and no matter how much I try, I just can't get the hang of snowboarding.
  • I am a huge fun of stand-up comedy and in particular, improvisational comedy.
  • I am currently learning HTML5, CSS and Javascript.
